The Balancing Act

So we had the CNY RW meeting yesterday. It was great. I went up for critique at the last minute. It was pretty good. I read the sixth chapter of Jaded Hope (working title). I got some great feedback from the group. I need to make Domino come off as more Alpha and I need to be a bit more consistent with Jade's character. I've gotten through the first five chapters of revisions. My goal is to revise the rest of it by January!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGH. In the meantime, i'm still working at the office in the morning, teaching in the afternoons, and maintaining full-time student status. I've written a few more pages on the romantic suspense. I think we're going with a working title of Los Diablos. I need to carve out more solid writing time in the next three weeks. I think I'm going to spend another day in Cortland's Library or Corey. Seemed to work well to finish the first draft, perhaps it will help with revisions. No distractions. :-)

Not much else to report at this point, just some SSDD goin on. Finished the draft of my romance reading class. The thesis: that the romance genre has a formula and it's not to blame for shitty storylines, lame characters, and cliches! It's a bit longer than it should be, but I'll work on that. Gotta read my book for residency, which is only a month away (can't believe it's come so soon). It feels like I was just in PA a month or two ago. It's been six! I'll be really happy to see all my other Troublemakers.

Been a While

Okay,
so it's been entirely too long since I posted, and even though I have a lot to update, it's just not going to happen tonight.

So I've started revisions on the first book. I'm working through them on paper first and then will be typing them up. And I began another novel, a Romantic Suspense about an undercover cop and a reporter. Wrote the first ten pages. Seems to be coming along nicely. Can't wait to get back to it, it'll be a few days though.
Cut and dry, but there it is. Next time will be more.

Conquering the World

Okay, so this is going to be kind of round-about, but stick with me, 'cause it's kind of profound, for me at least.

So, I've become kind of addicted to House because Greg House is ridiculous and insane and really really emotionally retarted/stunted. My father is quite a bit like House in that regard (as am I - we're cut from the same cloth). Dad and I don't do well with emotional mumbo-jumbo crap, though I must say, I'm a modicum better with it than he is. At any rate, praise does not come easily to my father. When I was a kid pulling down A's in class, he reminded me constantly that I was a disgrace to the family name because I REFUSED to get Cs (this was his way of telling me he was proud of me-- see, I told you it was going to be convoluted). And dinner is always adequate. This is the highest praise you will get for dinner (no matter who cooks it), I even learned how to say it when I was three. At any rate, he now has hold of my baby (my manuscript). He got it Sunday, though didn't really begin it until Monday morning. It is now Wednesday and he's 113 pages in! Last night, he told my mother, and I quote, "Well, it's not really my cup of tea, but I have to admit, I had a hard time putting it down. It's a page turner." Now I don't know if I've expressed to you the scope of what a monstrous occassion this was! But it was a BIG deal. HUGE!!! In fact! When I got home last night he asked me if he could retire when I got rich and famous because I could have a SERIOUS career in writing.

I know feel that if I can conquer my father, the single least sentimental and sappy guy I know into reading a romance and, brace yourselves, thinking it's GOOD, then the rest of the world will be a piece of cake! I think I was happier with this news than I was when I acutally finished the first draft of the manuscript. We'll see if he has the same feelings after he's read all the naughty bits. :-)

And the Writing Life Continues

Ok,
So using the momentum from finishing my first draft to start making lists of agents and publishers and which ones take unsolicited manuscripts and which ones want queries. I've taken a break from my romance and switched back over to my children's books. I've done another revision of my picture book about faeries. I'm going to start sending things out this week and next. So keep your fingers crossed for me. :-)
I'll be starting my cover letters and queries tonight and doing some more market research at B&N or Borders in the next few days. The manuscript has passed from mom's hands to dad's and we'll see how that goes. He caught me on a homonym (oops) so I've given him a pen to make any comments and to note any typos or anything else. It's a different color from mom's pen. Then I'll be taking it over and getting deep into my revisions. Should prove to be interesting. Always a thousand and one things going on at once.

Hmmm... Blogging

Ok so I've sort of done the blogging thing before, but nothing terrible consistent and not anything in-depth. I had to do it for a class and most of the blogs I wrote were rants about stupid people and how screwed up we are as a society. But I'll try to keep my blog writer-oriented?? Maybe, we'll see how things progress, shall we???

So writing - well I've finished my first draft of my first novel, a paranormal romance. I'm using it as my thesis at SHU and I was so excited to finish it. I went down to visit a friend at my Alma Mattar and I brought my mini LT (WONDERFUL invention, I might add) and when she was in class, I hung out in the library at school and then in an out-of-the-way corner in Corey and I ended up writing 30 pages. Including an epilogue. I felt so accomplished. So it's getting its first read-thru by my mom (she's an avid paranormal romance reader) and also a grammar head like me, and it's killing me to know it's sitting around, all printed out, and I haven't touched it yet. That's the plan for the weekend. She's got about fifty pages to go and I'm going to pull out all of the past critiques I've had so far this semester and from residency and start to go through it tonight and tomorrow. I also need to get to revising my 5-page synopsis. Should make for a busy week.  :-)
